Private Docent Tour- SB Historical Museum:

The 1925 Earthquake - 100th Anniversary

Before, After and Now!

At dawn on June 29, 1925, our city shook with a 6.3 earthquake leaving much of downtown destroyed or heavily damaged.  The SB Historical Museum is commemorating the 100th anniversary of this event with an amazing multi-media exhibition.

The exhibition contains eight simultaneous five-minute slideshows on various aspects of the earthquake: downtown, Mission/seminary, churches/schools, etc.   It also has quotes from people at the time as well as some narrative by Neil Graffey, and artifacts such as the electrical switch that turned off electricity to the city, thereby escaping the fires that destroyed SF after the 1906 earthquake.

Join us for a private docent-led tour of this exhibition.  Admission to the Museum is currently free. The cost of this event covers  docent stipend. 

**After the tour, we'll have an optional Happy Hour at a nearby restaurant.

Convenient free parking is provided by the museum in their parking lot. Access is from De la Guerra Street only. Coming from the east, turn right into the driveway just before you get to the museum building. It is very narrow and not well marked. Exit is on Santa Barbara Street.

Word has been spreading about one of our newest restaurants, OSPI at The Post, next to the Bird Refuge.  They are offering us a 4 course prix fixe $40 luncheon with several choices (drinks extra) so we will be collecting $52 to cover tax and tip from attendees at the time you make your reservation.  (There is a $25 cancellation fee if you don't cancel 48 hours before but hopefully we'll have a wait list.)

Ospi is short for "ospitante" meaning host in Italian, and their cuisine is "classic Italian with a modern twist."

Parking hint:  You can park nearby at the Bird Refuge but someone got towed from the old Stella Mare lot.  There is overpriced valet parking for $15.  I'd strongly urge everyone to carpool!  

They accept NO CASH so bring your credit cards to pay for your drinks which are extra.

We have a chance to experience the fascinating exhibit of Elliot Hundley: Proscenium and more at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on a 90-minute private Docent Tour. 

Step into the immersive world of artist Elliott Hundley at SBMA in Proscenium: Elliott Hundley and By Achilles’ Tomb: Elliott Hundley and Antiquity. These dual exhibitions reimagine antiquity in a mythic present, where Greek gods still rule, gravity is optional, and materials like feathers, willow, and shimmering spangles defy logic and form surreal, sculptural dreamscapes. Hundley’s work fuses ancient mythology with contemporary materials to create an intricate, alternative universe both timeless and timely.

Proscenium: Elliot Hundley opens with By Achilles’ Tomb: Elliot Hundley in Ludington Court, an intervention by the artist contrasting and complementing his own works with the Museum’s renowned collection of antiquities.

*After the tour, we will enjoy each other's company at happy hour at Mizza Italian Restaurant (next door on State Street).  This is a self-pay happy hour and PLEASE bring cash only.  No credit cards.

The tour itself is free.  If you are not a Museum Member, a $10 Admission will be collected upon arrival.  You pay the Museum by credit card, but please bring cash for happy hour.  If you decide to join within a few days of the tour, the $10 admission can be credited toward a museum membership.

Summer evenings are made sweeter by the sound of music

Join a group of SBSC members as we gather for a fun evening of music!  BRING  LOW LAWN CHAIRS and/or a blanket or towel, and enjoy a summer band performance, outdoors on the grounds of the beautiful historic Stowe House.  We have a saved spots for us to sit, identified by orange balloons tied to chairs.   If the mood hits you, get up and dance!

Dogs are not allowed.

Parking is challenging unless you come very early.  Alternative transportation or carpooling is definitely encouraged.

*I suggest you come early and beat the crowd, bring some snacks/drinks and socialize.  Look for the SBSC signs and orange balloons tied to chairs.

Riviera French Film Festival - The President's Wife

Join us for an early evening presentation of an award-winning French Film, selected as part of the SBIFF/Riviera Theater's French Film Festival.

 "The President's Wife," long the woman-behind-the-man, Bernadette Chirac (Catherine Deneuve) arrives at the presidential Elysée Palace in 1995 frustrated and all but cast off by her newly elected husband, Jacques (Michel Vuillermoz).  Having always worked in his shadow to help his ascent to the presidency, Madame Chirac now fully expects to finally get the place in the political elite she believes she deserves.

After the film we will gather with Social Club member Hubert Leveque for Happy Hour snacks and drinks outside at the Crocodile outside Tiki Barbecue .  Food and drinks are at your own cost.  Please bring cash.

Master Class and Picnic at Music Academy of the West

Join your fellow Club members at the Music Academy of the West for an entertaining Master Class, watching featuring famed pianist Conor Hanick give solo piano pointers to some of music's most promising talent.

After the Master Class, join your fellow SBSC friends for a BYO picnic in  Anne’s Garden, the beautiful and serene area by the Morton Bay Fig Tree next to Hahn Hall.. Bring some goodies to eat and maybe to share. We'll have tables in the beautiful area by the Morton Bay Fig Tree.

Pianist Conor Hanick is regarded as one of his generation’s most inquisitive interpreters of music new and old. A fierce advocate for the music of today, Hanick has premiered over 200 pieces and collaborated with composers ranging from Pierre Boulez, Kaija Saariaho, and Steve Reich, to the leading artists of his generation. 

The class will be in Lehman Hall.

  Hike Lovers' Loop & Wildflowers

Come join friends for a beautiful hike in the Santa Ynez Mountains and lunch at Hook'd on Lake Cachuma!

Lover's Loop is a lovely four-mile hike that takes you through miles of lovely grass and oak-covered hillsides to views out over the lower valley, Grass Mountain, Zaca Peak and Figueroa Mountain.  It is considered a moderate hike and takes about 2 hours.  There are two stream crossings – water should be low in July. Bring water and poles if you need them.  After the hike we will meet up at Hook'd - for a casual lunch looking over Lake Cachuma.  We will meet in the parking lot below Macy's at 9:00 and carpool or meet at Trailhead.  Directions to Trailhead will be sent with confirmation.

The Presidents Tent VIP Cafe Table seats 8 people and is located on an elevated platform, offering a clear and unobstructed view of the polo action.  This spacious, shaded area is perfect for those seeking a more intimate yet comfortable setting.   Ideal for eating and drinking, the table provides a relaxed environment with the added benefit of a dedicated server to assist throughout the day.

Step back in time to a more gentile era while you feel the thunder of 1200 pound horses running by. This is the sport of kings!  Grab a glass of champagne for the traditional Divot stomp at half-time.  Spectators wander all over the field stomping down the torn-up turf.

It's fun and you can meet great people just wandering the field.  Players often walk divots to keep limber at the half and often they take breaks or change ponies close to the stands.  Many times you can say hello to the best polo athletes in the world.

Botanic Garden Walk & Picnic

Enjoy strolling through the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden with fellow SB Social Club Members.  What could be better than eating outside among nature's bountiful treasures.  Bring your own lunch as we find a lovely area to sit, eat and socialize with each other.  

Meet promptly at the Botanic Garden entrance at 10:30.

Please let us know if your plans change and you can't make it so that we do not wait for you at the entrance.

 
 Afterwards you are welcome to continue to explore the Garden as long as you would like.

Hermitage Santa Barbara

Private Museum Tour 

Join us for a tour on one of SB's best-kept secrets!  Hermitage Santa Barbara is a world-class, whimsical art museum and botanic garden, open only by reservation on a limited basis publicized only by word-of-mouth. 

The collection includes more than 260 bronze busts: 43 presidents,126 authors, 72 composers, and 22 others.  Many of the sculptures, including life-sized bronzes, are mounted outdoors in a unique setting with thousands of remarkable subtropical plants, including rare and exotic flowering trees.  You will find many surprises here!

The sculpture and botanic garden walking tour is about 1.5 miles stroll with stairs, hills, and some uneven terrain. There is no access to benches or seats along the way. We climb the equivalent of 7 floors over the course of an hour or so. We encourage you to wear sturdy walking shoes and a sunhat and bring water. We do still tour in light rain but will postpone if it is truly raining.

Here are Hermitage instructions for your visit:

• Photos of your visit are allowed for your personal use only. Please no publishing, hashtags, social media of any kind, yelp or google reviews. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

• The docent-led tour takes approximately two hours total; we cannot accommodate people leaving the tour mid-way. You must stay with your docent at all times; do not separate from the group.

• The guided tour may be too strenuous for those with walking/standing difficulties, tour contains some uneven and hilly terrain, please wear appropriate shoes.

• You visit at your own risk and waive any claim against the Hermitage in case of injury.

• This tour is appropriate for adults only

• A sunhat and water bottle are recommended. We tour in light rain but will postpone if it is truly raining.

• Books are available for purchase at the museum.

Upon Arrival:

• Please plan to arrive no earlier than 10 minutes prior to the time of the tour so that we may be able to properly receive you.

• Drive to the bottom of the colorful driveway and let the assistant guide you into a parking spot.

• Walk up and around outside to the front door of the Museum (book building).

Aloha! You are invited to a Tropical Dining In at a beautiful outdoor veranda, complete with tropical drinks, pupus and other treats. The main dish will be provided by the host. Choose what you'd like to bring when you register. Bonus points if you wear tropical attire!

We are EXCITED to present our second SBSC "OKTOBERFEST."   We expect Oktoberfest to be very well-attended again -- complete with a professional accordion “oompah” player in lederhosen!  Grab a friend and get up and dance if the urge hits you.  Traditional German food will be provided as well as vegetarian options.  Of course, what event would not be perfect without beer on tap from "M Special" and the omnipresent wine.
